Virtual Hangout

I would like to take this opportunity to give my two oldest children a huge SHOUT OUT!

After having been without friends and family during this pandemic, I find little connections so meaningful. I have spent a lot of time on video chats, yet miss the physical connections I once had.

Thursday, Thanksgiving for many, was such a crazy day. Being an international teacher, I worked and did not have time to prepare anything, nor did I have a family gathering opportunity. For so many, this tradition was very different this year. It is moments like these that empower me to appreciate the little things in life. Jessica was home alone and enjoying her day off, Jared found a friend to share his day with, and I had my husband, David. With some collaboration and in the spirit of the day, Jessica and Jared found a time to meet virtually. Even if only for a short amount of time, I was with my children. To make the day even better, Jessica, David, and I played a virtual game, talked, and just hung out.

I am reminded of the Positive Discipline Parenting Tool Card, Closet Listening. Hang out with your kids and don’t force conversation by asking questions. They might start talking.

Throughout my children's' lives, my favorite moments in the week were times that we could just hang out. My favorite activities were country drives, an afternoon at the park, or Friday night game night. Conversations were never planned, and the topics of discussions were rich with meaning and understanding. Listening without judging or fixing can be challenging and so rewarding. It was during these times that I learned the most about what my children were feeling and thinking.

I look forward to in-person interactions where we can hang out and simply enjoy each other's company. Until then, I will cherish the virtual moments I have.
